Teachers negotiating multilingualism in the EFL classroom

Tässä artikkelissa tutkimme suomalaisten englanninopettajien käsityksiä maahanmuuttajaoppilaista, joilla on monikielinen tausta, vieraan kielen luokkahuoneessa. Aiemmat tutkimukset monikielisistä oppijoista ovat keskittyneet toisen kielen oppimiseen tai oppijan äidinkieleen. Tässä tutkimuksessa keskitymme englantiin vieraana kielenä, sillä maailma on aiempaa monikielisempi ja liikkuvuus yleisempää kuin ennen. In the context of English as a global language, more and more people are learning it for the purposes of L2 to L2 communication. Criticism of global coursebooks is that they still operate within an ESL, native-speaker model. This article explores the arguments that these textbooks are culturally biased in favour of the target culture. The literature and studies show that publishers have not reacted to the changes that have happened to the international nature of English, nor have they made any amendments to the content of global coursebooks in reaction to criticism. Analysing Lexical Density and Lexical Diversity in University Students’ Written Discourse

Abstract This study analyses both lexical density and lexical diversity in the written production of two groups of first year students at the Universitat de Valencia at the beginning and end of one-semester teaching period. These results were compared with those obtained by a third group of students aiming at level C2. Lexical density was tested using Textalyser ( http://textalyser.net ) and lexical frequency used the software RANGE (Nation and Heatly, 1994). Our results prove that the students from both groups at level B1 show the same progression between writing tasks 1 and 3. Begona.Clavel@uv.es The 21st century is and surely will be characterized by multiple and dramatic changes at all levels, but especially in the field of technology. This paper examines how some of these changes influence the way in which languages in general, and English in particular, are taught nowadays. We show how we have applied an Innovation in Education Project methodology in some modules in the degree in English Studies. Our most important instrument is our E-Learning platform (Aula Virtual) which offers us numerous ways in which to bridge the gap between our students and the team of teachers and permits our students to learn through a more interactive type of methodology.
